My financial future comes down to a dog with a ski mask: Ski Mask Dog.

** UPDATE: I currently do not own any $SKI.

I woke up this morning and opened up “X,” aka ex-Twitter. (I still have a hard time not calling the bird app Twitter.)

And usually, all I see are hard and soft shills of various memecoins and other tokens that CT (CrytpoTwitter) influencers peddle to pump their bags or make aware to the general public, the latest, shiny tokens that promise you riches and financial freedom beyond your wildest dreams.

Penthouse in a six-star Dubai hotel? Check. Lambo? Check. G-wagon? Check. Iced-out AP? Check.

But this morning was a little bit unusual because, behold — I saw a screenshot of an IG account of Camela Cabello, the pop singer whose hit “Havana” was heard all over the world just a few years back. (Update: my wife just informed me that she is Shawn Mendes’ ex-girlfriend.)

Two things:

  1. On the screenshot of Camelo’s IG account was a profile pic of a dog wearing a ski mask — that’s right Ski Mask Dog.
  2. The screenshot was shared on Twitter by one of the better known figures in the Based (Coinbase’s L2 chain) ecosystem, Kingofbase.eth.

My instinct told me that the screenshot was fake. There’s no way Ski Mask Dog, with less than 5k holders, had already found its way to a celebrity for such a new-ish memecoin on a new-ish chain, Base.

The only way to check the veracity of the photo was to check IG, but I don’t have an IG account. So the next best thing was to check dexscreener to see if there was a pump.

And there it was, the pumpeth.

I, too, was pumped. Elated. Ski Mask Dog, like all other meme coins, had been fluctuating in market cap (MC) wildly in traditional finance (trade) terms but not so wildly in crypto terms where the slogan goes: down 80%, then up 3000%.

Quick aside: By the way, I am not a good trader. I rotate into bad coins and generally see my earnings turn into vapor.

But there’s something about Ski Mask Dog. I want to be clear: I’m not shilling here. I’m just trying to explain what makes me hopeful that it can really turn out to be the “wif” of Base.

Kingofbase.eth says it best here:

Let’s go through some reasons:

  1. Jesse Pollak is the Creator of Base. That pretty much says it all. According the Kingofbase.eth, Jesse owns some Ski. By the way, here’s the link to his presentation on the importance of memes in onboarding millions onchain: https://zora.co/collect/base:0x556d931c44ea4dbdf172e99ffaf14f8a62bf6788/1
  2. Camilo Cabello. Yep — the Havana girl. I don’t follow pop, but you have to be living under a rock to not have heard Havana a couple years back in every store, supermarket, and corner.
  3. Unlike Solana memecoins, many of the Base memecoins share too many of the same aesthetic sensibilities. To wit: many of the Base memecoins are cartoon-like in appearance and are often colored blue (probably to match the Base logo color); for example, just look at Brett, Doginme, and Briun — all cartoon-like with blue being the dominant color in their respective images. Ski Mask Dog, on the other hand, is a real-life dog with not a tinge of blue in sight. That makes it stand out.
  4. Lastly, another important development in the Base ecosystem will be the launch of Coinbase’s Smart Wallet. In short, the wallet, which normies are more apt to try due to the fact that they won’t have to write down any seed words, and that the wallet will be tied to their Coinbase account, which could end up being a gamechanger. Maybe. The verdict is still out.

But I’ve placed my bet (a relatively small one at that) on a dog with a ski mask. If there’s one fact: on many chains (eth, Solana, etc.) the #1 memecoin is generally a dog coin (e.g., doge, floki, wif, etc.).

Also, my financial future doesn’t depend on a memecoin. Unless, of course, this dog does a wif and goes to billions in marketcap.
